Auntie

Unique female Portrait Sculpture in Ceramic Stoneware

H27cm  x W24cm x D15cm

This sculpture honours the revered figure of the Auntie in African culture, a woman of colour whose role extends beyond family into the heart of the community and society. She is a nurturer, protector, and custodian of wisdom, often unacknowledged yet ever-present. “Auntie” is a term of deep respect, given to elder women who guide, support, and correct with grace and strength.

She holds space, speaks truth, and passes on heritage through thoughtful listening, storytelling, daily acts of care, quiet resilience and empathy. Never defined by status or spectacle, but by her powerful influence in shaping lives and holding communities together. This sculpture celebrates the strength, dignity, and generational and societal impact that Gwenda encountered on her travels and nearer to home, honouring all the women who have stood firm, spoken gently, and walked proudly.
