A Yorkshire Creative Retreat: Four Days of Clay, Dogs and Making

I’ve just returned from a wonderful few days in Yorkshire — a mini break with some of the dogs, combined with precious time immersed in clay in Yorkshire.

While much of the world was caught up in the excitement of the World Cup, my focus was also elsewhere — glorious countryside, sunshine, wagging tails, cool streams, clay-covered hands and studio floor, and the quiet joy of making. Four uninterrupted days to experiment, explore ideas and reconnect with the process without deadlines or expectations. Lots of laughs and diverse conversations.

Stepping away from my usual studio environment gave me the freedom to follow the material, try new approaches and enjoy those moments of discovery that are such an important part of my sculptural journey.

Not every experiment becomes a finished sculpture, but every exploration adds another layer to my practice.

A huge part of the experience was being able to spend time with the generously spirited Brendan Hesmondhalgh at The Sculpture Lounge, discussing and developing my ideas and techniques, as I have done over several years, challenging myself to continue to grow as a sculptor.

I’ve returned home refreshed, inspired and excited to see where these new ideas might lead-when the kiln delivers the results!
